MYC 50th anniversary, stories from around the bar table…
First (and only) Mooloolaba to Hamilton Island Race, report from former Commodore, Trevor Gourlay.
The state government supplied Police boat Vedette 4 for the start boat and the then Premier Mike Ahern (later to be called Mike Astern after serious boat of sea sickness on the boat) was the official starter.
Sir Robbo and I were the start crew.
Once the race started Mike Astern could not stomach any luncheon – so quickly vacated the premises.
This left Robbo and myself to entertain the water police .
A very large session began with more MYC notables joining the session.
I swapped my Commodore’s shirt for a water police shirt and Robbo swapped his dress North Sails shirt with one of the other guys.
Great night occurred until Robbo snuck down to the Vedette 4 to obtain another police souvenir (the gun).
Robbo got home (drove) only to receive a phone call – Listen here your little *&*&_*&, get that gun back here immediately to which Robbo replied he was too drunk to drive.
I am not sure of the rest of the conversation, but Robbo was was back to the club within 20 minutes from Caloundra
