Tune into episode 8 of Ahoy!
Today we hear from MYC club member Karen Young.
The 47-year-old ocean racer is preparing for her third Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
She will again join the Melbourne team on Faster Forward, a Sydney 38.
They were on the start line last year but only made it to abeam of Wollongong.
This year Faster Forward plan to get all the way to Hobart if the COVID-19 border restrictions allow the race to go ahead.
Karen’s first Hobart Race was as a member of Lisa Blair’s 2017 Climate Action Now all-women campaign. They finished 15th in IRC Division 2.
She loves racing the big boats. Being out on the ocean with a crew is Karen’s comfort zone when it comes to sailing.
Karen started sailing at age 30, taking up regular ocean racing out of Melbourne. Then a 10-year break took the keen and very fit sailor away to pursue other interests.
It’s only in recent years Karen has returned to her passion, completing several Melbourne Hobart races and buying her own yacht Galatea to campaign it in the Veteran’s Division of last year’s Brisbane Gladstone Race and to a PHS regatta win in the Sunshine Coast Ocean Racing Series.
The Rolex Sydney Hobart Race is Karen’s main focus this year. But, with or without that race, 2021 is a year full of return and new adventures as she aims for more fully crewed and two-handed ocean racing challenges.
