RC of Sailing Members Update, Jan 2019
I wanted to update you all on significant changes coming up in the Sailing Program for 2019.
Sunday 20 January 2019 – Lady Helm Race #2 (postponed from 2 December 2018).
Easter Shield: The Manly – Mooloolaba Race (Hart Cup) scheduled for Good Friday 19 April has been postponed by WMYC to Saturday 4 May (Labour Day Long Weekend). This is to allow WMYC and RQYS members who are sailing in the Brisbane – Gladstone race to also participate in the Hart Cup which has not been possible under previous scheduling. Hopefully, this will mean increased participation by Brisbane boats in the event. Further, WMYC would like to participate in a Mooloolaba Bay Race on Sunday 5 May. The Brisbane fleet would either cruise or race home on Monday 6 May. MYC would not plan on any event that day.
In my view, holding a regatta or shield event over Easter only 2 weeks prior to the Labour Day Weekend would be a major undertaking for club volunteers and crews alike, I suggest that instead we schedule a long Blue Water race, viz. Noosa Bay, on the Easter weekend, either on the Friday, Saturday or whatever day most skippers would prefer.
Clearly, The Hart Cup is WMYC’s race and participation is very popular with MYC skippers, MYC has no right to decide when it is scheduled.
However, I would appreciate your feedback as to holding a Mooloolaba Bay Race on Sunday 5 May and a BWS race sometime over the Easter weekend.
Other reasonable suggestions would also be appreciated, eg. hold an Easter Regatta with an alternative BWS race and a Bay race and not have any MYC races planned for the Labour Day weekend other than The Hart Cup.
I look forward to hearing from all our skippers who would normally take part in these events.
Mark Coghlan, RC of Sailing MYC.
