MYC Women achieve outstanding results in Melbourne Regatta
The MYC Women’s Representative teams achieved outstanding results at the 29th Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta hosted by the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron over the Victorian Queen’s Birthday long weekend (June 8-10) on Port Phillip Bay.
The Merak team placed third on a countback with the first 3 placegetters finishing on equal 11 points in IRC and third also in the S80 class on countback when equalling 2nd on points. Bon Vivant was a close 2 points behind in 4th position in the S80 class which included 13 S80 boats.
Challenging conditions (day 3 seeing gusts well over 30kn) and a record 40 highly skilled teams tested all crews. Despite quite a few bruises all the MYC women are looking forward to next year’s event and the Women’s Program is hoping to send more teams as they continue their Women’s Skills Development training.
Program coach and Canadian Olympic Laser competitor Danielle Kennedy described the event as highly competitive, of a very high skill level whilst at the same time in a fun, supportive & encouraging environment.
Boat owners kindly & generously loan their vessels to teams for the event- many thanks to Bas Huibers (Merak) & Russell Keays (Bon Vivant).
Team members included:
Merak- Tanya Kelly (helm, skipper), Kristie Hatch (main), Kristen Davidson (main & pit), Gaye Hoole (pit, headsail), Kerry Teed (mast), Abbie Glenister (foredeck)
Bon Vivant- Danielle Kennedy (helm, skipper), Kerri Smith (main), Karen Young (pit, headsail), Del Morrison (pit, headsail), Sarah Johnson (foredeck)
