Welcome to the wonderful world of sailing. Active, outdoors, social, fun – it’s there for the taking through Discover Sailing.

The MYC program offers a simple training pathway for anyone wanting to get into sailing or for experienced sailors wanting to develop their skills and on-water confidence.

The safe, fun and affordable nationally accredited program is supported by qualified instructors and follows a national syllabus.

There are five training modules available – Start Crewing, Start Helming, Start Skippering, Spinnakers, and Start Racing.

START CREWING

This introductory course is the best way to learn the basics of sailing and to discover sailing at Mooloolaba Yacht Club. No prior sailing experience is necessary.

In this course you will get familiar with the training boats and the key responsibilities of being a crew member. You will also gain the confidence to control the sails and a basic understanding of the effects of most of the boat controls.

START HELMING

Start Helming teaches you the first steps in being in charge of steering the boat.

This course is the perfect introduction to the basics of controlling the boat.

You get familiar with the boat and the key responsibilities of being a helmsman as well as learning the effect of steering on the sails and gain a basic understanding of the effects of steering.

START SKIPPERING

The Start Skippering course focuses on decision making process for the person in charge of the boat.

It further develops your motor skills and exercises the thought process behind making decisions.

SPINNAKERS

Before you hit the competitive race course there is one more step to equipping you to help your fellow crew to be at the head of the fleet.

Or for seasoned sailors, it’s a chance to hone your skills in handling and trimming the ‘kite’.

START RACING

It’s now to time to take your sailing to a new level and go racing.

You can learn racing tactics at both an elementary level for those new to the concept or hone your seasoned sailor skills.

This course considers all components required from all crew and skipper to successfully get around the course faster than your competitors.

  • After participating in the introductory Start Crewing course there are a further four levels to the Discover Sailing program:
 Course Length   Overview  Areas Covered
Step 1 Start Crewing  12 hours The first step on the Keelboat pathway introduces you to the basics of sailing on a small boat, including boat handling, safety and sailing theory. Basic sailing terminology and rules, basic knots, tacking and gybing, man overboard recovery.
Start Helming  12 hours This course develops both your theory and practical skills to confidently take control on the helm. Preparation of the boat, helm and trim on all points of sail, recovery of man overboard whilst at the helm.
Step 2 Start Skippering  12 hours You will now advance your sailing skills and safety knowledge to enable you to skipper unsupervised in sheltered waters. Assess risks on board, boat maintenance, actions in an emergency, sailing backwards, mooring, interpreting weather and environmental conditions.
Step 3 Spinnakers  12 hours This course introduces you to the fun and challenge of using asymmetrical and/or  symmetrical spinnakers. Set up spinnakers, hoist, and drop techniques, correct use of spinnakers.
Start Racing  12 hours You will now learn the basic racing rules, skills and tactics and gain an understanding of what is expected of a racing crew on a small boat. Basic racing equipment, optimising sails for racing, understanding teamwork, basic rules of racing, crew communication.
