Discover Sailing – Start Crewing

This introductory course is the best way to learn the basics of sailing and to discover sailing at Mooloolaba Yacht Club. No prior sailing experience is necessary.

In this course you will get familiar with the training boats and the key responsibilities of being a crew member.

You will also gain the confidence to control the sails and a basic understanding of the effects of most of the boat controls.

The course is held over 12 hours. Places are limited.

Cost – $400 which includes the MYC’s membership ‘Discover Sailing’ which gives you 5 free guest sailing experiences (excludes Elliott6 sailing) and is valid for 3 months.

You will be sailing on the club’s training boats on the river at Mooloolaba and in the company of a qualified instructor.

At the end of each session you will be encouraged to socialise in the MYC clubhouse, located right next to where you will be doing your training, joining your fellow course participants and club members to share your experiences, stories and make new friends.

Sailing Element Criteria
Preparation
  • Understands the importance of the correct fitting and wearing of lifejackets
  • Understands the importance of appropriate clothing and footwear
Boats and Equipment
  • Has basic knowledge of sailing terms, can identify parts of a boat, rigging and sails
  • Can bend on, hoist, lower and stow sails
Ropework
  • Can tie the following knots: figure of eight, bowline, round turn & two half hitches
  • Has basic knowledge of the use of sheets, halyards, winches, clutches, and cleats
  • Can coil and stow a rope
Skills and Techniques
  • Understands the theory and basic principles of sailing including tacking and gybing
  • Has basic wind awareness
  • Can trim sails on all points of sail
  • Can tie up boat alongside using springs and mooring lines
Safety and Emergencies
  • Understands the correct action to be taken to recover a man overboard
  • Understands the correct use of safety equipment on board
  • Is aware of hazards on board a boat and understands how to avoid them
Sailing Theory
  • Has awareness of the basic rules of the road
  • Can maintain a continuous lookout

There are five training courses available – Start Crewing, Start Helming, Start Skippering, Spinnakers, and Start Racing.
