Women’s Skills Development Program 2024: Sign up now!
Women sailors – both MYC members and non-members – are invited to participate in our Women’s Skills Development Program
2024 Term 3 Session Dates:
20th July – 9am to 1pm
3rd, 17th & 31st August – 9am to 1pm
14th September – 9am to 1pm
Meet: MYC Clubhouse, Clubs’ Precinct @ Mooloolaba Marina, 33-45 Parkyn Parade, Mooloolaba
Cost: $40 per session for MYC members. $60 per session for non-members (includes a SailPASS – max 3 sessions*). Sorry – no refunds. This is an all-weather program: if it’s not possible to be on the water, classroom sessions will be substituted.
Pre-enrolment is compulsory. You will not be able to participate if you just turn up on the day, since your sailing experience needs to be assessed and numbers are limited.
Enrolment: please phone Gaye on 0410 477 802 or email women@mooloolabayachtclub.com.au. Gaye will explain the program in more detail and ask you some questions about your past sailing experience to help you choose the best option for your own development and enjoyment.
Please note that this is NOT a ‘learn to sail’ program. Participants will need to either complete the MYC’s Discover Sailing program or demonstrate previous recent sailing experience and knowledge to a level that they can rotate competently through the various crew positions on the boat.
If you have none or little previous sailing experience but would like to learn, MYC offers Discover Sailing courses.
The Program
The program is for women of all ages who have some sailing experience and who would like to improve their keelboat skills as crew and/or as helms. The aim of the program is to increase women’s participation in sailing – either at MYC or elsewhere – to refine their skills and develop their competence and confidence as cruisers or racers.
The program is run by paid and qualified facilitators and coaches to deliver a structured and progressive program. You can book one or multiple sessions, however for continuity, it is highly recommended that participants book for two consecutive Saturday mornings.
Focus topics vary from week to week, covering all aspects of sailing and crew work.
Sessions include a mix of classroom learning and primarily, on-water sailing skills mentoring, utilising the MYC’s four Elliott6 keelboats.
We hope to also run ‘Master Classes’ and extension programs, facilitated by expert coaches, depending on availability and interest.
If you already have sailing experience, this is an opportunity to further develop your sailing skills and confidence and, if you choose, to move from a crew role into a skipper/helm role. For Club members, the program provides a pathway to represent MYC at a variety of both women’s and open regattas locally and around the country.
Follow the MYC Womens’ Sailing Facebook page
*Please note that non-members can attend up to three (3) sessions. A SailPASS gives you the opportunity to try sailing a number of times, plus it allows you to get the feel for the club before doing a course or becoming a club member. If you wish to continue, you will then be required to join the Club as an Active Sailing Member. Please see further details under Membership .
Bring:
- Water bottle
- Sunscreen
- Sailing gloves (a small number of MYC gloves are available to borrow)
