Commodore’s August Member Update

During this period of COVID-19 lockdown the MYC will be closed. We will be providing further information as the situation evolves, hopefully for the better.

Whilst the MYC Board are firmly setting their sites on the Spring and Summer sailing season ahead, there has been a lot going on at the club over winter that I wanted to share with you.

Thanks to all of our MYC volunteers who work to make our club activities such a success.

Thanks also to all club members who have been so patient as we work through ensuring that we follow the COVID-19 guidelines to keep our community as safe as possible.

A few important highlights to mention:

  • The Etchells Regatta was again a major success, with competitors across the nation taking to the water in Mooloolaba Bay. The organisation both on the water and onshore was exceptional.
  • The Mooloolaba Women’s Regatta was ready to be held last weekend with 7 teams across Queensland competing, with training races completed, all competitors were ready for some serious racing. The lockdown however, resulted in the regatta being postponed until October 30-31. We are looking forward to welcoming the teams back to MYC then.
  • The MYC has been an Australian Sailing Team Supporter Venue. The Olympics were streamed live at the club every day that the club was open. Whilst the club is closed, we will continue to post updates during the lockdown on our Facebook and Instagram pages as there is so much fantastic sailing on offer.

Subject to COVID-19 restrictions –

  • The final Super Saturday Series racing will be held on Saturday the 21st of August. This fun open event, involves river racing on our Elliott 6s, all are welcome, come on down and we will help organise you on to a team.
  • Youth sailing is again kicking off at the MYC!!! ‘Discover Sailing for schools’ will commence once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so. Please contact the club if you are interested.
  • In preparation for the upcoming Bay Yacht Racing season, we are offering a free information night on Thursday the 19th of August at 1830 for those wanting to explore friendly yacht racing in Mooloolaba. We will run through sailing formats, safety and audit requirements and how to find crew or how to find a boat, using the Australian Sailing supported Sail Connect For those thinking about getting out on our beautiful bay for a sail with us – we can help you.

Yours in Sailing,

Tanya Kelly
