Commodore’s Members Update, November 2017

  • 24/11/2017

Ahoy Members,

With the festive season fast approaching it’s exciting to pass on the following news and details of upcoming events.

Our clubroom is now up and running with our packed trophy cabinet in situ. A huge thank you to everyone who pitched in, helping with the move and set up our new clubroom.

It has been great to see there plenty of new members and the return of familiar faces.
Since October, 21 members have joined the MYC – welcome to James Beeby, Wayne Pearce, Joanne Newson, Darren Smith, Carolyn Smith, Aaron Armstrong, Femke van de Kallen, Cameron Smith, Stuart Kennedy, Danielle Kennedy, Karen Young, Peter Clark, Rachel Sheridan, Greg Young, Barbra Young, Steven Cook, John King, Leigh King, Andrew Wild and  Karen Wild.

It’s my pleasure to also welcome Karen Sim to the office. Karen is volunteering two days a week assisting with any club admin as well as working on events such as the up coming Christmas Boat Parade.

With the Parade firmly on our horizon on December 16th, make sure you have a plan in place, either it be on the water or at the MYC clubroom enjoying a cool drink from what will be the best vantage point on the night.

Who would want to miss the MYC Tinny Rally? December 10th marks the day where you can win the bragging rights and the prestigious award, enjoy fun filled afternoon of a wild goose chase on the Mooloolaba canals in your tender, tinny or party pontoon. This all is of course before adjourning to the MYC clubroom for our Christmas Party, organised by Stevo, from 3pm.
Don’t forget Friday nights, our sheep stations AKA Wes Air Rum Runner Series is up and running. This is one of the best regular social events offered by your club, whether you’re on the water or part of the onshore ‘coaching team’, a good laugh is a guarantee.

Our women’s skills program is a wrap and was a huge success. Kerry Teed, who took part in the program, is now with the assistance of a Council grant, heading to Melbourne with two teams in June to compete in the 28th   Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta. Well done Kerry and all her team members!

MYC Member and Comanche boat captain Casey Smith has been generous to offer MYC Youth Members a tour aboard the super-maxi not long before it heads to Sydney for the Start of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart on Boxing Day.  Karen Young will also head south this year with Lisa Blair on an all-female crew on board Climate Action Now.
MYC 2017 MYC Yachtsman of the year, Bob Robertson is making the wise choice to race north to warmer waters from Pittwater after Christmas with Corrobboree.

Several of the youth are heading south for class national championship, Sail Melbourne and Sail Sydney, including  Frazer Brew, Sarah Johnson and Australian Sailing Team Member Mitch Kennedy.

David Turton and Trevor Martin are continuing their march towards Brisbane Etchells World Championship qualification. Turts is leading the point score after four races.
James Hodgson is down in Sydney for his match racing commitments, and to sign up for university. He has also gained entry to next year’s Warren Jones youth regatta in Perth.

And, the club continues to put on racing every Wednesday and Sunday so if let’s get ourselves out on the ocean and enjoy our summer sailing with vigor, probably a bit of yelling and a whole lot of great competition.  Skippers don’t forget to pencil in our Australia Day Regatta which will include a blue water, windward/leeward and short passage racing

Looking forward to catching up with all of you over the coming weeks.

See you on the water.
