MYC Women’s Development Regatta Date Set for April 25th

The Mooloolaba Yacht Club is excited to announce its inaugural Women’s Development Regatta will be held on the afternoon of April 25th.

The club has been hosting a fortnightly Women’s Sailing Skills Development Program for almost two years on their fleet of four Elliot 6 keelboats on the Mooloolah River on Saturdays. Recently the boats have undergone a refurbishment and been upgraded to be able to be taken offshore into the Mooloolaba Bay in suitable conditions.

The program, proudly supported by Next Property, is designed for women who have some sailing skills/ exposure who would like to continue to learn, to upskill and have a fun time. As such the program continues to grow and there are now over 60 ladies on the program list.

The Women’s Development Regatta has emerged from the growth of the program and the skills of the participants and is open to anyone who has attended any of the training sessions. Women interested in racing will be allocated into teams with an aim to have teams of similar skill levels to make for close competition. Presentations will be made after completion of racing, including some ‘fun’ awards.

The organizers are very proud of the achievements these women have made and are hopeful Anzac Day afternoon will provide the perfect opportunity for friends and families to come to the MYC clubroom (upstairs above Rice Boi restaurant at The Wharf, Mooloolaba) and watch their loved ones show-off their new skills from the club’s Sunset Deck- the perfect vantage point to watch all the action.

The Development Regatta provides the participants with an opportunity to experience fleet racing which is exciting, tactical and at times in close quarters. It provides a steppingstone to other regattas if that is the path they choose, including the MYC Mooloolaba Women’s Winter Regatta to be held over the weekend of June 27 & 28.

MYC also sends teams of women to a number of other regattas each year including the Helly Hansen Women’s Challenge in Sydney in March, the National Sailing League Women’s Final regatta in Newcastle in April, the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta in Melbourne in June, the SheSails Gals Regatta in Townsville in September,  the SheSails Newcastle Open Regatta in November,  together with several other match racing events.

The skills developed from the program provide women with the confidence to join crews in offshore club racing events which are held each Wednesday and Sunday afternoons on members’ larger keelboats.

No matter which pathway women choose- fun on the water or more competitive racing, the MYC Women’s Sailing program is there to support them in their endeavours.

For those ladies new to sailing, opportunities exist with Maroochy Sailing’ s Adventure Program http://www.maroochysailingclub.com/adventure-sailing or Sunshine Sailing https://learn2sail.com.au/. Mooloolaba Yacht Club will also be offering Learn-to-Sail (keelboat) classes from mid-year through .
