MYC Womens Teams take First & Second places in the Newcastle She Sails Regatta

Two MYC ladies teams competed in the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Clubs’ She Sails Regatta on Saturday November 10th. Six windward-leeward races were held on the clubs’ 6 Force 24 boats in the basin area of Throsby Creek.

The anticipated light winds turned into gusting winds averaging close to 15kn with gusts seen well over 20kn. The variable and gusty winds together with wind shadows from surrounding buildings made for great tactical racing opportunities.

Racing was postponed at lunch time to allow for the movement of large ships in the area and for a leisurely lunch delivered to each boat by race organizers- the snakes as always were a favorite by many.

Danielle Kennedy’s team of Kristie Hatch (mainsail), Del Morrison (headsail) and Kerry Teed (foredeck) took out first place with 5 wins and one second.

Tanya Kelly’s team of Kerri Smith (mainsail), Karen Young (headsail) and Gaye Hoole (foredeck) took out second place in tight competition.

It was a challenging ask to compete on unfamiliar boats, but the ladies weekly training on  the MYC Elliot 6 boats helped this enthusiustic group to these great results.

The women all praised the organizers who did a brilliant job making everyone welcome and running a professional and friendly, fun event.

The teams are already looking forward to next year’s regatta when NCYC will have their 8 new Elliot 6’s to race on.

The ladies are continuing their training as they prepare for a number of events next year. If you may be interested in joining the teams or training with them please contact Suzanne on 0416 331 181 or email sailing@mooloolabayachtclub.com.au for more information.
