RC of Sailing Update on Members Meeting, 14 July 2022.

Last week we held a meeting of MYC boat owners, skippers and active sailing members to discuss the composition of sailing events for the 2022-23 Sailing Season. Thank you to those who attended and to those who sent apologies. We had a good attendance and productive discussion for future events. Some of the decisions made included:

With the commencement of the new season, we will be changing to SailSys for our sailing administration which will include boat and crew registration, event entry and payments, handicapping and race management.

SAMS events continue throughout the season, however, they may be interspersed throughout the season with a number of other social sailing or novelty sailing events. When we are not able to sail offshore, SAMS may be replaced by river sailing, possibly with offshore boat crews sailing together in the Elliotts.

WAMS are continuing and there was discussion about the type of pursuit handicapping system we will follow – the Sailing Committee will discuss this further.

We will reintroduce a Short Course Series, comprising of 2 or 3 windward – leeward courses for each event.

The Women’s Helm Series and Long Bay Series will continue, the number of events in each series to be determined.

River sailing will continue with the current events on the calendar, Rum Runners on Fridays, Super Saturday, substitute for SAMS offshore sailing when necessary, Women’s Regattas, Mixed MYC Teams Regattas and Mixed Interclub Regattas.

The meeting discussed options for communications re upcoming race events. Currently, all skippers are messaged the day before the event, eg SAMS, WAMS, LBS, WHS series, re weather and sailing conditions and as to intent to sail. The meeting discussed changing the communication method to include all sailing members using either Messenger or What’s App – the Sailing Committee and Board will discuss this further and make a decision for the new season. Further to this, the meeting expressed a desire for a decision to abandon or postpone an event be informed to members by 20:00 on the day before the event. Sometimes the decision is clear and can be made early, at other times the decision is not so clear and may need to be made early on the day of the event.

The Sailing Committee with comprise RC Sailing (currently myself), Peter Bradford, Suzanne Mabbott and Robert Stevenson (Stevo) who is rejoining the committee.

The Sailing Committee strongly encourage all sailing members to participate in all events in both river and offshore sailing. The greater the participation, the greater the enjoyment for everyone and development of the club.

Join us for Sailing. Fun and Friendship.
